Meet Our Executive Leaders
Chief Executive Officer
Jeff joined CRI Worldwide as its Chief Executive Officer in 2009. Jeff has over 18 years of experience building companies which have developed business models to address the inefficiencies in the delivery of healthcare services and drug development processes. He has been a leader in the development of strategic planning processes as well as the development of operating infrastructures for a number of high growth companies.
Before joining CRI, Jeff was the Chief Operating Officer of Comprehensive NeuroSciences (CNS) a leading organization conducting Phase I and later stage clinical trials. He led the expansion of CNSís Phase I capabilities in addition to overseeing Phase II/III operations. Jeff was also a founder of Kelson Clinical Trials, a multi-site network conducting pediatric clinical trials, Kelson Pharmacy Services, a specialty pharmacy distribution company, and MedOptions Behavioral Health, a leading provider of medication management services. Earlier in his career, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Mariner Health, a post acute provider, from regional start-up through the national expansion of the company including its initial public offering.
Darren Black, MBA, AB
Darren Black joined SVLS in 2003, became a Partner in 2008 and is focused on healthcare service, pharmaceutical service and healthcare technology investments. Darren currently serves on the boards of Allegiance Hospice, Ricerca, Vitalize Consulting Solutions, CRI Worldwide, CR and Spectrum Professional Services in addition to several active board observer roles.
Before joining SVLS, Darren was Co-Founder and President of two companies: ClinCare, a site management organization and PharmaStar (sold to United BioSource Corporation), a central nervous system education services company. Earlier he was a healthcare consultant for Accenture, assisting managed care and provider-based clients on strategy formulation and implementation.
Darren earned an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an AB in Government from Harvard College.
Patricia Hall, CPA
Chief Financial Officer
Tricia joined CRI Worldwide in July 2010 as its Chief Financial Officer. Tricia has almost 20 years of financial management experience in the biopharmaceutical and drug development sectors. Her experience includes assisting in raising public and private equity and debt, financial evaluation of business development opportunities, including acquisitions and mergers, cash management, SEC and management reporting, and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
Before joining CRI, Tricia held various financial management positions with Neose Technologies, Inc., Novavax, Inc. and Charles River Laboratories. Tricia started her career with Laventhol & Horwarth, CPA after earning a BA in Business, from the University of Florida. She is a Certified Public Accountant.
Dr. Howard Hassman
Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Howard Hassman has a vast knowledge of clinical research with over 25 years of experience in the field. He has teamed with the most respected organizations conducting studies that led to medical and technological breakthroughs. Dr. Hassman began conducting clinical trials in 1982 and is considered an expert in the field of Psychopharmacology. Dr. Hassman received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983. He conducted his rotating internship at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital University of Medicine and Dentistry from 1983 to 1984. From 1981 to 1984, at the University of Pennsylvania, he trained as an investigator with W. George Case, MD, Director of Training in the Conduct of Clinical Research. He also trained for 13 years as an investigator with Karl Rickles, MD, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Hassman worked as an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1984 to 1993. From 1990 to 1993, he worked for The Prudential Insurance Company of America as a Medical Director for PruCare Plus of San Diego. He is Board Certified in Family Practice as an Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon in California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
From 1984 through 1997, Dr. Hassman worked as a General Practitioner at the Family Practice Associates of San Diego, Inc. Dr. Hassman was also Medical Director of his research facility CMCR, which worked together with Dr. Karl Rickels from the University of Pennsylvania from 1981 to 1994. In addition, Dr. Hassman served as an Associate Professor in the department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1984 to 1994, while in San Diego. In 1998, he established CNS Research Institute (now CRI Worldwide) and currently serves as its Chief Scientific Officer. Dr. Hassman’s primary areas of research interest include: Depressive Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s Disease, Panic Disorder, Pediatric and Adult ADHD and Bipolar Disorder. Currently, he is on the Advisory Board at Eli Lilly & Co. for Atomoxetine in ADD and ADHD for Pediatrics, Adolescents and Adults. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Group at Organon, Inc. for The New Treatment Option for the Mature Depressed Patient, and serves on the Advisory Panel for Adult ADHD at Novartis.

Lawrence Brownstein, MBA
Executive Corporate Development
Larry currently leads CRI's Corporate Development strategies and other vital growth-focused activities, and has served in multiple leadership roles including Business Development, Finance, and Operations since joining the company in 2001.
Upon graduating from Northwestern University with a Bachelors of Arts, Mr. Brownstein began his professional career as an entrepreneur. After founding, growing and selling a small business, Larry obtained his Masters of Business Administration from The Pennsylvania State University where, as a graduate student, he wrote his thesis Translating the Voice of the Customer into Service Quality. While at Penn State, Larry earned special scholarship recognition for his academic participation in the Smeal College’s Manufacturing Option, a curriculum focused on executive interaction and leadership approaches within the world’s best manufacturing companies.
Over the course of his career, Larry has been integral in the growth and success of several Fortune 500 firms including HEALTHSOUTH, Advanta and NovaCare. While at HEALTHSOUTH, Larry was integral in carrying out a rapid growth plan as the firm expanded its regional operation from seven facilities to more than 150. In addition to managing clinical operations of multiple locations, Larry managed more than 50 account executives, while focusing on high-level accounts, and initiating and managing partnerships with a wide range of businesses including NBA, NFL and NHL franchises.
Larry is professionally trained in the areas of improving the oral and written effectiveness of others and in a wide range of sales methods. He is a certified facilitator in the Integrity Selling® sales methodology and has used this certification to develop sales teams and increase performance in organizations of all sizes. Larry has published many articles in the areas of Strategic Management, Implementing Productivity Improvement Programs and Organizational Assessment Techniques.
Larry serves on the Alumni Admissions Council for Northwestern University, is an active member of the Board of Jewish Children and Family Services, and served on the Cradle of Liberty Council for the Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), Associate Member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP) and the National Sleep Foundation (NSF). Larry was installed as a biographical candidate to represent Clementon, NJ in the “Honors Edition” of the Empire Who’s Who Among Executives and Professionals.
Maria Pinho, RN, BSN
Vice President, Clinical Operations
Maria has over ten years experience as a Nurse Management Leader in Clinical Research including seven years at CRI Worldwide. Subsequently, Maria gained extensive experience in Behavioral Medicine including Memorial Hospital of Burlington County (now Virtua) and the Center for Emotional Fitness in Moorestown prior to joining CRI. Maria also has over ten years of experience in Long Term Care at the Masonic Home of New Jersey. Through her career Maria has conducted more than 50 clinical trials in CNS across both early and late stage studies in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In 1996, Maria earned her BSN from Holy Family University and is both CPR and IV certified. She holds a registered nurse license in both the state of New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
James Callahan, BA
Vice President of Finance and Contracting
Jim received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Philadelphia University. Jim oversees and reviews contracts as well as billing and day to day accounting and operations. His accounting experience over the years has included preparation of monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements, as well as preparing yearly operating budgets and capital appropriations. He has acted as the point person for all audits performed by independent auditors and has experience in union contract negotiations. His management responsibilities includ overseeing A/P, credit and collections, general ledger, P/R and all accounting computer operations. Throughout the years, Jim has also been involved in the planning and running of several successful outside community events.
